The Two Major Spring Types

Residential doors might work with either extension or torsion springs. We install both types. 

Extension Springs

Residential sectional garage door extension springs are mounted above and parallel to the horizontal tracks. They come in pairs and installed at the two sides of the door unless the door is very heavy, in which case there would be a need for more springs. They stretch and compress to counterbalance and move the door. 

Torsion Springs

Standard residential doors usually have one torsion spring mounted above the opening. If there are two of them installed, there is one at the left side of the anchor bracket and one at the right side. The bracket secures the spring. There is a metal shaft that goes through the spring, which winds and unwinds to develop torque and move the door. 

Extension and Torsion Spring Parts

These are the major extension and torsion spring parts. They play a great role in the overall operation of the door and should be replaced if they are damaged. We offer same day spring services. 

Extension spring pulleys

For standard residential doors with one pair of extension springs, there are four pulleys. One end of each spring is connected with the pulley. The cable goes over the pulley and is attached to the horizontal track with an s-hook. 

Extension spring pulley fork

This is a metal part which connects the pulley with the extension spring. It passes through the looped side of the spring and is mounted with a bolt on the pulley. 

Spring end parts

The end parts of springs vary. Extension springs have open or closed loops or clipped ends. Torsion springs have cones at each end. At one side they have a stationary cone and at the other end there is a winding cone. 

Extension spring safety cables

These look like regular cables, but the difference is that they are laced through extension springs. They act as protective parts since they keep the spring coils in place should the spring breaks. 

Torsion spring shaft

This is the metal tube that goes through the torsion spring. It is secured with end bearings at the two ends and here is where the cable drum sits. It transfers the spring torque to the drum. 

Cable drum

This is the grooved metal part mounted on the two sides of the torsion spring shaft. For standard residential doors, they are mostly flat with ridges. Their ends are raised. The cable is wrapped around the drum. 

Spring bottom bracket

This is the bracket which is installed at the lower two sides of the door. The bottom rollers are attached to these brackets. One side of the cable is secured on the bottom bracket. 

Garage door cable

The cable comes in different sizes depending on the size of the door. There are two cables – one at each side. They are wrapped around the drum and hold the weight of the door so that it will open. 

Torsion spring cones

There are two torsion spring cones and each helps the spring to create torque so that the door will be balanced and open. The stationary cone is attached on the anchor bracket and doesn't move. At the other side, there is a winding cone which is used for spring installation and adjustment. 

Center support bracket

Typical residential garage doors do not have this extra bracket. The shaft is not necessarily supported in the middle. The center support bracket is useful for double car doors with one or two springs.
